The Emperor’s Focus ~ Rune and Tarot for 23 Jan 2017

Tarot doesn’t only concern itself with the meaning of each individual card but how each card relates to each other in the deck as well as in a spread. In terms of a progression in the Major Arcana, the Magician and the High Priestess relate to each other as do the Empress and the Emperor. In a spread, direction can matter as when, for example, two Court cards appear to be looking at each other, possibly suggesting some sort of interaction between the two individuals or the qualities they represent.

Whenever The Emperor presents in a reading I look to see if a card appears before him. In today’s reading, The Emperor appears first, looking to his right, and with the absence of another card, we don’t know for certain what he’s looking at. Without another card to interact with, The Emperor could be looking to the past, but I believe that he’s looking at The Empress who appears before him in the Major Arcana.

The Emperor card in the Thoth tarot is ablaze with reds and yellows, the sun’s catalytic energy reinforcing The Emperor’s authority and leadership. He rules the conscious realm of physical form and represents fatherhood, benevolence, and structure. A ram appears over each shoulder, protective and inquisitive. His legs are crossed in the same manner as the Hanged Man, a lamb with a flag sitting at his feet. The shield to his right reflects the same two-headed eagle found on The Empress’s shield connecting the two partners.

As he gazes at his Empress, he presents evidence of his love and devotion. The 10 of Cups is titled Satiety, the golden cups runneth over in abundance. But it’s an abundance of emotional presence that’s felt with this card. Although The Emperor projects authority, he’s unafraid to express emotion, extending that unconditional love to his mate.

The 8 of Disks or Prudence depicts a flowering tree whose roots extend far below the ground suggesting The Emperor’s strong foundation. The branches and flowers appear balanced and orderly, implying an attention to detail. His accomplishments in life have paid off as he provides the structure and stability necessary for their future together.

As with the Hanged Man, I view the crossed legs of The Emperor as reflecting the balance between mind, body, and Spirit. Clearly in this reading The Emperor has balanced his emotional presence with strength of character, achieving a successful outcome.

The runes included in today’s tarot reading are Laguz, Fehu, and Isa reinforcing The Emperor’s balanced focus. Laguz and Isa allow a softer side to his power to come through, as he goes with the flow, wisely choosing observation over action when appropriate. Fehu influences and attracts wealth and abundance, assisting The Emperor in achieving his goals.

The numerology is 22, a Master Builder number which indicates success, suggesting that The Emperor possesses the confidence and ability to become a great leader as long as he doesn’t let ego get in the way. When The Emperor is ill-dignified he is arrogant and self-indulgent. Life becomes all about him with his success at the expense of others. It’s sad really, because without The Empress, the Emperor wouldn’t even exist, a consort at her discretion only. He could learn from her elegance and grace, but if focused on the self, it’s likely he’ll view her with disdain, for his purpose, his pleasure, the Satiety from the 10 of Cups representing debauchery and excess.

Sorta sounds like the new guy. Instead of accosting women, he could regard us with respect, but that seems beyond him. He walked into the White House, his wife emerging from the other side of the limo, alone, President Obama and Michelle graciously doing her husband’s job for him by assisting her to the door.

He didn’t even notice.

Thanks to the Russians, the new Emperor is as naked as a jaybird..which happens to be short for jail-bird..

Just sayin’

Blessed be
