Well, if you’re reading this, then you survived 2018. How intact, is another issue, but here we are. It is what it is. I was tempted to look at the year ahead, but I chickened out and I’m only looking at January. After writing this, I’ll finish up January’s tarot reading and then I’ll think about looking at the year ahead.

As I’ve done with other monthly geomancy readings, I’m going to break the upper two sections into four weeks. The lower three positions will give an overall view along with additional information from the symbol in the fourth position as the end of the matter. I’ll also include a reconciler symbol determined by combining the first symbol with the Judge or final symbol on the shield chart. Graphiel is the intelligence of Puer, the beginning symbol of the reading, and his sigil appears in the lower section of the chart. But I’ll begin first with a breakdown of the symbols from the top right and moving left throughout each section of the chart. Then we’ll look at each week.

  • Puer ~ Fire Element, Mars, Aries, youthful male, impulsive action
  • Carcer ~ Earth Element, Saturn, Capricorn, imprisonment, evil influence, outmoded ideas, restriction
  • Caput Draconis ~ Earth, North Node, Capricorn, beginnings, gain, upper threshold
  • Albus ~ Air, Mercury, Gemini, wisdom, sage, clarity, communication
  • Fortuna Minor ~ Fire, Sun, Leo, lesser fortune, unstable success
  • Amissio ~ Earth, Venus, Taurus, loss
  • Fortuna Major ~ Fire, Sun, greater fortune, success, light, life
  • Cauda Draconis ~ Fire, South Node, endings, evil, disaster, termination
  • Rubeus — Water, Mars, Scorpio, red, passion, fiery temper, vice, evil
  • Acquisitio ~ Air, Jupiter, Aries, gain, profit
  • Conjunctio ~ Air, Mercury, Virgo, joining, union
  • Puer ~ Fire Element, Mars, Aries, youthful male, impulsive action
  • Right Witness ~ Tristitia ~ Earth, Saturn, Aquarius, sadness, evil, grief
  • Left Witness ~ Puella ~ Air, Venus, Libra, somewhat fortunate, flighty, fickle, charming
  • Judge ~ Amissio ~ Earth, Venus, Taurus, loss
  • Fire Element ~ Will ~ 5 symbols
  • Air Element ~ Intellect ~ 3 symbol
  • Water Element ~ Emotions ~ 1 symbol
  • Earth Element ~ Physical ~ 6 symbols

Week One

The first week of the year begins with Puer, Carcer, and Rubeus influencing. Our will, emotions, and physical concerns will be in balance this week with intellect a lesser if non-existent influence. This suggests that reason may take a back seat this week to other influences that could be less than settling. It might be best to take an observer role this week as influences of instability occur. Puer is full of energy, but it’s energy that can be impulsive. Rubeus’s self-centered passion can amplify that impulsivity, and with Carcer’s focus on imprisonment by self or others, we may be our own worst enemy this week is we rise to challenges that may be of our own making.

Week Two

Elemental Air finally makes an appearance this week with two geomantic symbols along with one from Earth. Caput Draconis, Albus, and Acquisitio comprise week two’s influences. Our intellect is more active this week filled with expansive clarity and gain from the influences of Albus and Acquisitio. Caput Draconis suggests new beginnings as well as reinforcing gain, so last week’s unstable energies should give way to something more proactive and positive this week, possibly increasing income or profit.

Week Three

Fortuna Minor, Amissio, and Conjunctio comprise week three’s geomantic influences bringing in two influences from Elemental Earth and one from Fire, so practical matters are of concern this week. Some fortune or gain is experienced, its amount perhaps affected by loss felt with Amissio’s influence. But Conjunctio is about unity and joining, so it may be that what was gained in week two may be going out this week in the form of payments owed.

Week Four

We end the month in Elemental Fire. All three geomantic symbols this week are governed by Fire and represent our will. Fortuna Major, Cauda Draconis, and Puer comprise this week’s fiery influences suggesting gain and fortune, but also endings and a lack of impulse control. Cauda Draconis also indicates the termination of something and is considered an evil influence. But it can also indicate letting go of what no longer serves, so we may want to focus on letting go of impulsive or destructive behaviors which prevent success.

Overall influences ~ Right and Left Witnesses and the Judge

Geomancy charts are read from right to left. I know, it’s odd. But that’s how it’s done. On the right at the bottom of the shield chart sits the Right Witness and for this reading, that position belongs to Tristitia, a geomantic symbol representing sadness and sorrow. Considered an evil influence, it’s easy to see how a focus on sorrow prevents us from moving forward. In the position of the past, Tristitia suggests that this is what we’ve been experiencing.

On the left side, the side of the future, we have Puella, a fairly positive influence but one that can be energetically flighty and a little unstable. It refers to a young girl whose head is in the clouds and a bit fickle in nature, hence the positive but iffy feeling about the future.

Amissio, the symbol for loss, presents as the Judge for the month suggesting a loss of some kind. However, we shouldn’t see this as necessarily problematic because it can mean a loss of negative influences, which is a positive thing. So the Judge may be indicating a loss of instability and sadness. Maybe we’ve been able to put the past behind us and now we’re ready to reconnect with others with whom we’ve been estranged, or perhaps we’re ready to move on to a new job or a new home.

If looking at a Reconciler, we derive that from combining the first symbol with the Judge. Caput Draconis holds that position reinforcing energies of new beginnings. Perhaps January begins a new experience for us, one that leaves behind what no longer serves, and allows us to reconnect with others and begin a more positive journey. The positive energies of Week Two may provide a springboard for growth that is both unexpected and welcome. With Albus in position four on the shield chart, it describes the end of the matter suggesting that whatever happens, we’ll go forward with wisdom and clarity.

We’ve moved from a year of illumination into one that is catalytic and unifying for mind/body/Spirit alignment. Let’s make the most of it!

Blessings to all!
